However, in reality, body armor was a valuable asset to the real Spartan soldiers. They had chestplates and leather skirts on but the director had them removed to make them look better.

Their shields were only made of wicker and were no match for the Spartan weapons. In the film, the Immortals wear shiny faces to cover their faces. Yes, this battle really happened. Xerxes chose only 300 Spartans because if he had taken the entire Spartan Army, he would need the permission of the Council, who he knew would not agree with him. They could fight this huge army because the men were loyal to Xerxes and stayed entirely of their own will, declaring that they would not abandon Leonidas and his followers when they were in trouble, and fight on till the very last.
